4. WMA11/01 Edexcel IAL P1 January 2020, Q4 (Radians: Radian Measure)

Figure 2 shows the plan view of a house ABCD and a lawn APCDA.

ABCD is a rectangle with AB = 16m.

APCOA is a sector of a circle centre O with radius 12m.

The point O lies on the line DC, as shown in Figure 2.

(a) Show that the size of angle AOD is 1.231 radians to 3 decimal places.

(2)

The lawn APCDA is shown shaded in Figure 2.

(b) Find the area of the lawn, in m2, to one decimal place.

(4)

(c) Find the perimeter of the lawn, in metres, to one decimal place.

(3)

SOLUTION

a-

Using trignometric ratios, to find the angle AOD.

cosx=412

x=cos-1412

x=1.23095

x=1.231

b-

Area of Lawn=Area of sector-Area of AOD

Where area of sector is given as

ASector=12r2θ

Where

θ=π+x

θ=π+1.231

So the area of the sector is

ASector=12r2θ

ASector=12x 122x π+1.231

And, the area of triangle AOD is given as

Atraingle=12absinθ

Atraingle=12x 12 x 4 xsin1.231

Therefore, the Area of Lawn is given as

Area of Lawn=Area of sector-Area of AOD

AL=12x 122x π+1.231-12x 12 x 4 xsin1.231

AL= 292.196

AL=292.2m2

c- The perimeter of lawn is the sum of arc length APC, length DC, & length AD.

P=l+DC+AD

Where, DC=16m, l=rθ, & AD is

AD=122-42

AD=128

So perimeter of the lawn is

P=l+DC+AD

P=12π+1.231+16+128

P=79.784

P=79.8m
